TRAVEL COURSE - World Citizenship: Living Abroad
Purpose: The purpose of this course is to study and explore expatriate life and acquaint students with living and working abroad as opposed to pure tourism. The course instruction will include readings on expat living, guest speakers, and a two week study travel experience living in a foreign country. Topics will include, but are not limited to, acclimating to a new culture, working abroad, expat living, legal issues abroad, finances, food, transitioning, and historical culture.
Limitations:
Students need to be able walk 1000 metres (including uneven surfaces) while carrying luggage that is holding belongings for 2 weeks. Students must be able to navigate stairs while carrying luggage holding belongings for 2 weeks. Students must be willing to integrate into foreign cultures including using facilities, eating, and socially interacting. Dietary accommodations cannot be guaranteed due to the nature of foreign travel. Students must be able to uphold professional standards for places of business and schools in foreign countries. Students must be respectful of cultural mores and traditions of foreign countries. Students must be able to tolerate extremes in temperatures, weather, & humidity.
Dates: May 5 or 6-21
A minimum of 5 students are needed to go.
Program:
Activities will be designed around learning about living abroad. Students will be shadowing expatriates in their chosen field, exploring housing, learning about living costs, and visiting the local areas. Students will learn about how business is conducted by international companies and organizations abroad compared to how they operate domestically. Students will also get cultural training in each of the visited locations. We will focus on 3 international locations – Shanghai, China; Hanoi Vietnam; & Hong Kong, SAR. Reflective essays, Interviews, and journaling will all be components of the learning experience.
